U-N-I – K.R.E.A.M.

UNI is a hip hop group out of Inglewood, CA and their first LP Fried Chicken and Watermelon is definitely worth checking out.  Although many hip hop fans aren’t quick to embrace so called “hipster rap,” I find that most of the groups gaining attention that could be placed into this genera have nothing but good things to offer.  Sometimes they are a little easier to listen to because they aren’t always talking about pain and struggle (although it’s important to discuss those things as well).  That said UNI is all I’ve been able to listen to since I copped their album.  Their two videos aren’t anything typically special but they are both great songs.  K.R.E.A.M. (a flip of Wu-tang’s C.R.E.A.M.), professes an obsession with kicks, which while shallow content is still an entertaining song.  I’m cautious to endorse anything that is supportive of blatant materialism (especially as an ardent environmentalist) but it’s always been a component of hip hop.  Beautiful day is such a summer jam and I’m kicking myself for not having discovered it before September!  The rest of the album is full of enjoyable rhymes and great beats that pay homage to the golden era of hip hop.  One I know my other contributors will enjoy is “Castlevania” an aggressive cut using the video game’s music in production and is chock full of cleaver gaming references.  So – buy this album!

Japanese 360 owners get shmup love

The Xbox 360 seems to be the shmup console of choice. Japanese gaming rag Famitsu reported that Cave’s second newest shump Death Smiles is getting ported to the 360 Spring 2009. Death Smiles will join several other notable shumps in the Japanese 360 catalog, including Ketsui, Dodonpachi DOJ Black Lable, Raiden IV, and Raiden Fighters Aces. The game will be a retail release (not a XBLA game) and will almost certainly not be released stateside, which really sucks because as of now playing import games on a US 360 is impossible, even with hardware modifications. Now only if we can get Pink Sweets or Muchi Muchi Pork…..

Get off the Phelps Bandwagon

Michael Phelps has been the talk of the sporting news the past week, and rightfully so. He won eight gold medals at the Olympics in swimming. I watched the two closest races and they were thrilling. But as impressive as his feat is, I am sick and tired of people calling him the greatest athlete of all time, or the greatest Olympian. There was a poll on ESPN today asking if what Phelps’ did this past week was the greatest athletic achievement of all time (as in ever). 73% of the freaking United States voted yes, which made me want to vomit. I like to think I give credit where credit is due, but this whole Michael Phelps phenomenon is to much for me to handle. Maybe the US media is blowing it out of proportion to take the attention away from the fact that China has almost twice as many gold medals as America. I just don’t get it. For those who didn’t know, Ratatat isn’t always making you freak out, dance frantically, or having cats scream at you.  They can calm it down too.  This is a song off their latest LP3 and instead of watching the brooklyn duo, you get to watch a warped old video of Simon and Garfunkel.  Something about this video makes me hysterical.

Final Fantasy XIII Coming to Xbox 360

I found out on Kotaku. It’s a pretty big deal, for Sony and Microsoft.  But one thing to keep in mind: is FFXIII even going to be any good?  No gameplay footage has been shown (hopefully there will be some before E3 is over), and the game keeps getting delayed, which are both classically very bad signs. But it is Square Enix’s flagship series, so they wouldn’t let something terrible be released (right?).
